I Think That Elden Ring Clip Is a Horse Commercial

FromSoftware posted twelve dark seconds of Siofra and the internet decided a Godwyn DLC was coming. I don’t think it is. What convinced me isn’t in the cave or the caption, it’s the PEGI badge burned into the corner of the video.

What Actually Happened

On July 31, the official Elden Ring account put up a short clip with a single line of text: “Even the perilous hunt for the demigods holds moments of quiet wonder.”

The video runs twelve seconds. A Tarnished stands on wet stone in the Siofra River, summons Torrent in a burst of blue particles, and rides out into the vault. No new geometry. No unfamiliar enemy. No expansion logo, no date.

By the time I sat down to write this it had cleared 6.2 million views, with a little over 19,000 likes and 1,700 reposts.

The replies went where you’d expect. The most upvoted reading runs: the caption mentions hunting demigods, the clip is set in Siofra, Siofra connects to Deeproot Depths, and Godwyn’s corpse is in Deeproot Depths. Therefore, Godwyn DLC. Several outlets picked the story up within a day and ran it more or less straight.

There’s a PEGI Badge in the Frame

The detail I keep coming back to isn’t in the cave. It’s in the bottom right corner.

There’s a PEGI 16 rating badge sitting inside the video, pegi.info URL and all. Bottom center, the Elden Ring logo lockup, burned in.

Neither of those gets added by a community manager grabbing nice footage on a Friday afternoon. Rating badges get attached when footage goes out as advertising and somebody at the publisher signs off on it. A branded logo card is finished asset work, not a screen capture.

To me that’s less a mysterious hint dropped by a developer in a poetic mood and more an ad that cleared a marketing approval process four weeks out from a paid release, with somebody deciding to leave the product name off it.

The shot itself fits that. The Tarnished is standing on a reflective water plane. The summon animation gets its own beat. The camera holds long enough for the star ceiling to open up behind him. Nobody stumbles into that framing mid-playthrough.

And if you happened to be selling mount cosmetics, a mirrored surface is a clever place to film a horse. You get the model twice for free.

The Caption Is a Tagline, Not a Riddle

The Tarnished Pack arrives on August 28, the same day Tarnished Edition lands on Switch 2. It costs โ‚ฌ4.99 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Inside: two new starting classes, the Heavy Knight and the Idus Knight, four armor sets, and three appearance options for Torrent.

What that pack is really asking you to do is start a new run.

Which is what the caption describes. The perilous hunt for the demigods isn’t a tease about unknown content, it’s the game you already own, pitched to somebody being invited to play it from the beginning again. Not cryptic. A tagline.

The tone follows from that. If you’re selling a fresh playthrough to people who have already done six of them, you don’t lead with a boss fight. You lead with the thing veterans forget: the Lands Between is beautiful, and you stopped noticing about four hundred hours ago.

The Godwyn Read Follows a Real Map

The community isn’t making the geography up.

To reach Deeproot Depths, you clear the Valiant Gargoyle duo in the Siofra Aqueduct, then rest in the coffin in their arena to be carried down. The other way in runs through the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds after Mohg. Both are documented, both are load-bearing parts of the map, and Godwyn’s body lies at the end of that road.

Somebody who sees Siofra and thinks Deeproot is following a real thread, not inventing one.

Godwyn is also the most obvious unfinished business in the game. His murder set the Shattering in motion, he never shows up as a fight, and Shadow of the Erdtree came and went without resolving him. If FromSoftware were ever going to do a second expansion, that’s the hook. Everyone knows it, including FromSoftware.

Where I Get Stuck on It

Miyazaki has been on record for two years. He told Chinese outlet Zhihu in 2024 that Shadow of the Erdtree is the first and last DLC and that there are no plans to add further content to Elden Ring. He’d been slightly softer with IGN a few months earlier, saying there were no current plans for a second DLC or a sequel while adding that he didn’t want to rule out something in the future. Together those read as a maybe on another game, not another expansion.

FromSoftware also doesn’t tease like this. When they announced Shadow of the Erdtree, they used the word DLC. This studio announces things by announcing them and then makes you wait two years. A wordless mood clip of an area you’ve walked through a dozen times isn’t how they’ve ever opened a campaign.

The strongest piece of community evidence points the wrong way, too. People noticed the area looks empty, no giant crab, no Ancestral Followers, and read that as significant. I’d agree it’s significant, I just land somewhere else with it. A cleared area is what you want for clean promotional footage. If you were teasing new content, an empty room would be the worst thing you could show.

What the Reaction Actually Tells Us

Six million views. On a clip of a four-year-old cave. With no announcement in it.

That isn’t embarrassing for anybody (I went through it frame by frame hunting for a hint), and I’m not interested in dunking on people for hoping. Mostly it shows how much appetite is still sitting there unspent, four years after release and two years after the expansion. Shadow of the Erdtree was enormous and it still left people hungry, which is a strange kind of compliment.

And the post worked. FromSoftware got a month of free reach out of twelve seconds of B-roll, and every outlet that ran a “fans hope for Godwyn DLC” headline printed the August 28 date somewhere underneath it. Plan or happy accident, it’s the most efficient marketing they’ve done all year.

What Would Change My Mind

If FromSoftware posts a second and third clip in the same register with no product tie-in after August 28, I’m wrong about the ad reading. If anything turns up showing terrain that isn’t in the shipped game, I’m wrong about all of it, and I’ll write that piece too.

Neither has happened. Until it does, my read is that we watched a horse commercial and collectively wrote fan fiction about it, and I mean that with real affection.
